Warmer, sunnier weather brings more field trips. We made a trek into the city for Doors Open Toronto in late May. The University of Toronto has some fabulous historic buildings. It’s one of my fave walks, and this is one of my fave buildings — Burwash Hall — a residence hall of Victoria University at the U of T, built around 1913. This building speaks to me, so there must be a story in there somewhere. I intend to find it.

Burwash Hall, University of Toronto

Burwash Hall 2

Burwash Hall 3

This is a verra long building. Verra long. I’m showing you two different sections. In the bottom picture, if you look just above the windows, you’ll see a pair of sneakers hanging from the telephone wires. Yeah. Right there in the cloud. Dude, whoever you are, that must have been some exam week.

Mr. G, honey took the pictures for me. Thanks, sweetie.

Hmm. Yesterday, in my neck of Canada, it was 62 Faren. Today it is 90! I want to put that in all caps and bold and italics and brackets and quotes and… You get the picture. It takes my breath away. Literally. When you have thick Northern Girl blood, it’s hard to go from 62 to 90 in a matter of hours. Really. I’d only like to do that on a racetrack, and then the number spread could be even bigger.

I was up early-early placing walking stones. We have to get some limestone screening under them, but that can be done one or two at a time.

I’m hieing off with a friend this afternoon to see Sex and the City. It’s how I’m coping with the heat — indoors, in a quiet theater, feet propped up, head back, glasses perched low on my nose so that I can see through the distance lens of the bifocal. Okay. I admit it. It’s really a trifocal. I’m in denial. This is what happens when you read…….a lot.

I’m going to try very hard not to turn on the AC. Very hard.

This is one of my fave garden flowers. I really need to move it back into the sun where it does best. We did a lot of shifting of plants last year while working on the exterior renovation and landscape. The leaves are fern-like and the blossoms make me think of little faeries.

The Coreopsis – Moonbeam

It’s the weekend. How are you going to beat the heat?

Gotta go.

Don’t get me wrong, he was thoroughly missed. That being said right off the bat, I did bliss-out –

1. staying up until three, sometimes four-thirty in the morning

2. watching a marathon of Monarch of the Glen on DVD

3. sending him little text messages while he was in sessions, just to keep it………lively

4. talking to him late every night about those little text messages

5. schlepping around in my fave clothes from the bottom drawer that no other human being should have to look at

6. sprawling diagonally across our marriage bed for sleep, with all four pillows tucked around me and my face smashed into His pillow

7. feeling no guilt about writer’s hair — see post Hair gone wild…

8. eating standing at the fridge, sink, stove

9. leaving the toilet seat down

Despite my slacker ways, I did get some good writing done. Yay! Saturday night did give me pause. It was late late or early early, depending on your POV. I was standing at the bathroom sink giving the teeth a good cleaning, when I heard a low, long, loud, ominous rumbling. The earth may not have moved, but the bathroom walls were trembling — scaredy-walls. I ran to the windows expecting to see a fireball from whatever had crashed. Not so. It was thunder — big, badass Thunder. The meanest I’d ever heard. Yikes!

I spent the next few minutes humming a few bars of Bill Bailey. Then, I jumped under the covers with the remote and clicked my way to oblivion.

I was all blissed-out.

A young black bear from up north went walkabout. I figure, for a black bear, he was the right age for such a journey. He was somewhere around three or four and weighed-in at about 200 lbs.

I was playing Miss Gracie in the backyard when a badass helicopter started circling the neighborhood and sirens started screaming. But, who pays attention to that anymore? I figured they were in pursuit of a two-legged critter of the human persuasion. Wrong. Well, isn’t ignorance just bliss?

Walkabout Bear was roaming through the neighborhood for a good twenty-four-plus hours. While I was blithely playing away in the yard, two nearby schools kept the kids in at recess and refused to let any of them walk home after school. Everyone had to have a pick-up. Teachers rock!

WB was finally sited near a plaza, which just happens to have a Tim Horton’s, and got a dart of tranquilizer for his trouble. It wasn’t a total wash-out for him. When he woke-up, he discovered that he’d won a first class, one-way free trip tick back home.

Here’s what I think. I think he strolled into town looking for a Timmie’s — most likely for a large double double – and a hoodie. It was damn cold yesterday.

Elen

p.s. This is not Walkabout Bear. This is his northern best friend forever.
