I woke up this morning and smelled snow. In the silence, I heard snow. Cranked open the shade and saw…snow. Thanks to lyricist Richard B. Smith, I was “walking in a winter wonderland.”

It looked pretty much like this, only a study in blue. Snow tires and front wheel drive got my sweetie out the door at 8 a.m. and slogging down the road to work. Sorry, honey. Them’s the breaks. I schlepped around the snuggy homestead in sweats, hoodie, and man socks slurping coffee and blissing-out on the view. The manly snowblower was tucked neatly in the garage waiting for…well…the man. Note to men: When you go out and buy the biggest, badass, monster snowblower you can find, expect that you will be the only badass operating it. Just sayin’. Later, I’d take out the other snowblower, our two-year-old Golden Retriever, and plow the backyard. But, a morning like this was made for reading — the slouched in a chair, wrapped in an afghan kind. This begs the question, “Whatcha reading?”
I just finished reading Anna Jeffrey’s Sweet Water. She’s a powerful storyteller, and I love her characters. Also just finished — John Grogan’s Marley & Me. It was funny and heartwarming. A few books in the TBR pile I’m looking foward to are: The Female Brain by Louann Brizendine, M.D., I’m Your Santa, a Christmas anthology by Lori Foster, Karen Kelley, and Dianne Castell, The Architecture of Happiness by Alain de Botton, and Twilight’s Kiss by Marly Mathews.
So, what have you just finished reading that you loved? What’s hanging around your TBR pile? What’s your December read? Oh, and do you measure your TBR pile with a ruler or a tape measure? And, would that be metric or….

My TBR pile is measured by a yardstick and has spilled over into four rooms. Yet last night I didn’t know what to read. I think it was because I had just driven home in that which created your Winter Wonderland. It was a bit unnerving when the car in front of my did a complete 360 then came to a stop sideways across the street. It was raining when I drove into work this afternoon.
I just finished reading The Fortune Quilt by Lani Diane Rich, Dangerous Lover by Maggie Shayne and True Evil by Greg Iles. All fantastic reads by three talented authors.

Wow, Elen! You truly have a winter wonderland today! Although I’m a warm-weather girl, the picture you’ve posted is perfect for this Christmas season. Love the way the snow has frosted the wreath on the festive red door. Really gorgeous. Stay warm and sip some hot chocolate!

Keziah – Spilled over into four rooms, huh? I know what you mean about not knowing what to read. That’s usually when I hunt up and old favorite. I’m thinking you needed something beyond a thriller to make you forget about that car (yikes!), or something warm and fuzzy.

I started Crazy in Love by Lani Diane Rich. She’s so funny. And insightful which is an unbeatable combination for me. I looked at the Rachel Gibson and some chick lit I have by authors I like but I didn’t want too light which makes no sense because Lani is considered light by a lot of people. She named a character after me in this one so maybe that was the appeal at the moment. Narcissism. 🙂

Hey Elen,
Well I’m an avid reader so I have a massive TBR pile, although lately it contains books like Edward Tufte’s “Beautiful Evidence” and a couple of Linux manuals (compsci alert). Still, in the realm of leisure… all-time favourites would be William Gibson’s Pattern Recognition and Guy Gavriel Kay’s The Summer Tree. Throw in C.J. Cherryh’s Cyteen and I’m happy for days. Happy snow day – I always feel the need to cocoon when its white and cold outside.
