Back in April of 2008, I wrote this post about adopting a soldier through the Soldiers’ Angels program. I just found out this past week that my soldier has returned home. Welcome home, buddy. I am so happy for you. Woot! Woot!
It was a joy and a challenge to be involved in a project like this. You’re sending a letter once a week and a package once or twice a month to someone you don’t know, have never met, will likely never meet, and may never hear from the entire time he/she is deployed.
I figured if I could come here and blog blah, blah, blah several times a week, I could do that. Writers are rarely lacking for words. Well, sometimes at critical moments, but let’s not go there. Right, Conn? Fortunately, I did hear from my soldier early on and that helped me connect.
So, back in April, I took down my mat master muse — Conn — in the sidebar and put up the SA logo and said I would leave it there until my soldier came home. Guess what? It stays. Yep. I just adopted another deployed soldier. Again, he doesn’t even know it yet. Again, Iraq.
One of the things I have learned is that mail is critical to these men and women who are serving so far from home. You would be surprised how many don’t get any. If you think you might have an interest in supporting the SA program, there are many ways to do that. Adoption is only one way. You can learn more here.
Should my first soldier wander by this post — Thank you for your service. Thank you for putting yourself out there. Glad you made it home. Oh, and as always — smiles across the miles and a big hug.
