from away…

Sometimes, when I settle down to write a post, and I click open the WordPress Posts Add New, and the category box looms in the right sidebar, I just want to click Uncategorized over and over and over again.

Does this ever happen to you?

I bet it will now.

Moving along.

When we were visiting Prince Edward Island last month, Mr. G, honey and I learned through stealth, merciless grilling, interviewing, conversation that islanders divide people on PEI into four groups: Islanders — those born and bred on the island that is Prince Edward; From Away — live on the island for ____ years, but are not born and bred there; IBCs — islanders by choice; and Tourists — those who arrive on PEI to eat crustaceans (well, not barnacles), drink Bloody Caesars, spend money, fall in love with all things islander, and leave before they move into the category From Away.

I’m still a little unclear on the distinction between IBC and From Away. Another trip there will probably take care of that. And I do so want another trip there. A longer trip. A rental trip. A bring the Golden Pup trip. We’ll see.

Some of this critical info was gleaned one evening from our very friendly server, while I was sipping a yummy amber ale made by Charlottetown’s Gahan House Brewery. Be sure to read its history.

Gahan Island Red Premium Ale

Our server put people into two categories — the Islander and the From Away. We had been commenting on how friendly everyone was on PEI, and asking what was it like to live there year round, and yada, yada, yada. The usual stuff you do when you’re on vacay, knocking back Caesars, feeling all fat and happy, and thinking — Ya know, I could live here. I Want to live here. Let’s quick run home and put a ‘for sale’ sign on our house. Right now.

Our server then went on to say that Islanders are most friendly to From Aways… if you’re visiting.

So if you’ve lived on the island for 45 years, but were not born there — sorry, honey — you are From Away. And the only way to be accepted as a From Away is to throw yourself into island life. Go to everything. Support everything. Love everything, and it helps if your server will adopt you into her family. Ours volunteered, so I’m thinking I have a little toe in the From Away door.

I’m also thinking there are only two groups of people on PEI and the other is just subcategory of the From Away. Then we ran into a couple of IBCs.

This will require further investigation.

I’m up to the task.

  1. Even if you marry an Islander, you’re still From Away. This IBC moniker is relatively new. I never heard it when I lived there 30 years ago. I suspect that people From Away call themselves IBC while Islanders still call them From Away. I could be wrong. I haven’t been back since before they built the bridge. But I did love it there. In all the seasons. With all the shortages. It is a photographer’s dream. Awww, now I’m homesick. I must go back.

    • Yes! You cannot become an Islander by marriage. I think maybe some things have changed in 30 years, and you should definitely go back. I’ll just tag along. 😀 I’m trying to decide if they gave Chef Michael Smith honorary Islander status or not? 😉
