We toured some of Doors Open Toronto this past weekend, the 16th annual.

Because we had limited time, we visited one locale with three venues — The Aga Khan Museum, The Ismaili Centre Toronto, and the Aga Khan Park. This link will give you a brief overview of each of these sites.

We struck out early on Saturday morning — Okay, early for Saturday! — heading to 77 /49 Wynford Drive. We toured the gardens first, followed by a guided tour of the Ismaili Centre. As early as we were, a thousand people had been guided through ahead of us. It was a well-organized and welcoming tour. I felt the pride in and joy of this centre.

The Ismaili Centre in Toronto — a gathering place for worship and education — was built in 2014 and is one of six throughout the world. We have two in Canada. The other is in Vancouver. The architectural theme is light and unity. The building is modern and one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. The Prayer Hall, a sacred space where we were asked to remove our shoes and turn off the cameras, is the centre’s most stunning feature.

I could sit there for hours, and there’s a place for that.
